Playing to Pedophiles: Is Society saying No when they Really mean Yes?

2009 Teen Choice Awards Pre-PartyThe increasing amount of activity relating to sexual predators has been a major concern to parents as well as the general public. It seems no place is safe for children anymore. Regardless of economic or social class predators are making contact with their intended victims whether it be directly or via the internet.

Watchdog programs have put people on high alert to the dangers of predators, but are all these preventives really a double standard? We are more concerned as a society than ever of the threat of pedophiles, but the media and fashion are seemingly catering to this group. Underage girls are consistently portrayed in a provocative light. Young celebrities push the envelope with their clothing and lyrics while their adult promoters spur them on.Dream Halloween 16th Annual Fundraiser

The game of dress up that many little girls played where they don their mothers clothing and high heels has seemingly spurred a revolution in the fashion industry. During the investigation into the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey much press was given to the world of child pageants, but the uproar has died as little girls dressing more mature seems to be the new norm.

This is not new news. This is the age old Lolita argument. Young girls should not be portrayed in such a way and we the adults have the power to change it. But, will society allow it? Don’t get me wrong without any type of provocation I believe pedophiles will always exist, but why feed the fire?

South Korean Prostitutes Driven To Demand Government RecognitionChild pornography as well as sex trafficking are billion dollar industries and its participants are subject to prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. But what part does society play in subconsciously advocating such acts? Society as a whole should be determined to make sure that people who engage in such acts are prosecuted, but they need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Where do you stand on this issue?

We as parents have to arm our children to be aware of their surroundings. We have to teach them to say no. We have to teach them their body parts and what they are for. And most importantly we have to teach them right from wrong, and stop hiding sex from them. My son is four and I taught him what his penis was and what it was used for, and who was allowed to see it. And I practice with him saying no, and I encourage him to tell me what he likes and what he dont like, who he like, and who dont like and why. I keep an open dialogue between us because I want him to always trust me and know that I love him and will protect him.

That is absolutely the key MD is having open communication with our children and making them aware that these people are out there and they prey on little ones. Only by educating them can we help to protect them so I commend you for starting early with your son.

I think that one of the major driving forces behind these children dressing the way that they do is money. From the fashion designer to the young singer dressing the way they do for higher sales, one lesson is reinforced constantly: sex sales. Now I am in no way against our capitalistic economy but I do think that we should vote with our money. Things that don’t sale, disappear. And MD is 110% right about education and talking to our children about this stuff. I did the same thing he did with my 5 year old. We need more like ya!

I agree with you Benji and sadly the idea that sex sales is beginning younger and younger. Thanks for the comment!

Isn’t it the parents’ job to say, “No, I won’t buy you the hooker outfit?” Do we have too many parents afraid to say “No”?

The truth is that mothers are dressing their daughters in these fashions. There are women, mothers, who think it’s cute to dress their children as mini-adults.

There are also mothers who are stretched to the max (single mothers) and allow people to have access to their children that they shouldn’t.

I’ve never been a fan of the child-bride phenomenon. It reminds me of Ahasuerus sending out folks to find lil girls and keep them captive, then marry them b/c they’re adult wives were too ‘womanish’. ala Esther

That must be the case Nordette. But even in the picture above the woman is smiling while these little girls are standing by this pole like that is cute. I do blame the adults.

I watched a special on Nightline recently and a man in Japan I believe was paying this girls family to basically sleep with her. They were going right along with the process. The parents who allow their children to parade around like this really make me wonder. Especially knowing that pedophiles are very active in most communities.

Thanks for the comment :) I agree with you and sadly, as long as we have people bent on promoting such things with out any regards to how they affect pedophiles it is going to be a huge issue.

A sexual predator is a sexual predator, you don’t intice people not interested in that sort of thing by the way you dress your child or yourself for that matter.

Your child may be covered head to toe, or dressed in something you feel is less than acceptable, it doesn’t matter, being there with your child and passing on your values is what matters.

We all have different opinions on what is and is not acceptable clothing, but regardless of how our opinions differ I think we can all agree that our children shouldn’t be preyed on by sexual predators.
