The Rise of the White Collar Thug

Stories of crime flood the airwaves daily, but in recent years a new kind of predator has made his presence known. This perpetrator isn’t waiting in a dark alley to steal your purse, or waiting for you and your family to leave home to break in. This fearless criminal does his work in broad daylight. A modern day Robin Hood in his own mind he steals from the rich, but unbeknown to him the effects trickle down to the poor. He is so brazen he never even wears a mask. Who is he? The modern day white collar thug.

In recent years we have seen many crimes committed by men who are educated business men who fit the profile of the so-called all American man. They have great jobs, great families, and large incomes. They live in areas that are the envy of the general public. They drive expensive cars and eat at the best restaurants. They are also members of prestigious clubs and can afford to send their children to the best schools. Yet, with all those enviable things they still use their power and influence to steal from others. And they do it with a certain degree of subtlety.

While most criminals target the immediately tangible such as jewelry or TV’s, this thug’s target is your future security. Your 401k plans, your pensions, stocks, and retirement funds. This modern-day thug can also be a sexual predator as well. He may use harassment against women in the workplace or even feign romantic relationships to commit his crimes. He may even use his accounting skills to make money mysteriously vanish. He may even resort to physical violence if he ever gets caught in the act.

Unfortunately this thug is one of the worst kind. He doesn’t fit the general description of most criminals. This villain wears a $1800 suit. But, he has become the worst threat in today’s virtual society. So protect yourself and be on the lookout for the white collar thug.

Years ago, songwriter and former Eagles band member, Don Henley sang, “A man with a briefcase can steal more money than any man with a gun…”

I think he saw the future.

Wow…Those were prophetic words. That certainly is the truth. Thanks for the comment Recycle Bill :)

wow.. it made me think of the politicians in my country. it made me think of the abusive and oppressive capitalists. it made me think of the businessmen who are only up to gaining profit and not about helping their employees and workers to grow and have a beautiful life in the future.

i like this post. very much.

I agree Bing…all of the above. They go on to enjoy prosperity while the people who work for them struggle. Sad state of affairs. Thank you so much for the comment!

The corporate thugs have way too much power nowadays. Or perhaps it’s a return to the days of the robber barons. I am not at all happy to see the corporatists with such power. It’s not only wrong, it’s short sighted.

I agree Mary Anne. For too long they were given so much freedom and even able to operate without any type of policing. Now we see that there is no trust between the public, their employees and them with good reason because they are so corrupt.

All I can think about is Bernie Madoff and how he made off with all that money for so long.

  • http://www.literarynobody.com/ Literary Nobody

That’s exactly who I had in mind when I wrote this piece. While he never laid a finger on anyone he single handedly committed one of the worst crimes in history.
