This post came to mind yesterday while reading the story of 25-year– old Laura Garza whose body was found after being missing for over a year. She was the victim of a sexual predator while out partying at a New York club. Her story as well as many others made me reflect on the dangers that women and men put themselves into due to judging a persons physical appearance as to whether the individual is a threat or not.
I’m not speaking on the specifics of what happened to Laura Garza, but in general there seems to be the thinking that because a person looks safe that they are safe and that is just not always the case. Women sometimes think that sexual predators will be obvious looking. Maybe scruffy, poor, dirty looking men that we were taught as children to stay away from.
Today, predators are more clever than ever and live right among us. No longer limited to the poor and uneducated some may actually be successful, well-dressed, and well-spoken men who don’t stand out at all as being any different from anyone else.
My point in this post is not to scare you, but as women and men in 2010 the lifestyle of going home or sleeping with strangers needs to be tempered with common sense. Although in this society it is unheard of for anyone to abstain from such activity doesn’t it make more sense to err on the side of caution?
In the case of Laura Garza she lost her life. That may not happen to all, but what about other long term effects like HIV? The spread of HIV is rampant even among those who seem less likely to contract it but it is something to be taken into consideration. The Bible says that man sees with the eyes, but God sees the heart. So in the light of these threats we cannot trust our own eyes on determining who is or isn’t safe.
