An apology is defined as:

  • A written or spoken expression of one's regret, remorse, or sorrow for having insulted, failed, injured, or wronged another: He demanded an apology from me for calling him a crook.
  • A defense, excuse, or justification in speech or writing, as for a cause or doctrine.
This is even what an apology looks like mapped out:

This is what an apology sounds like:

But, how many of us take the time to give one. And what is the statute of limitation on them? I thought of this recently because on Facebook several of my old classmates have reached out to me and it reminded me of my old HS and college days. While I considered myself a good person back then I am guilty of some bad actions against people I considered my friends back then.

For example at our last High School assembly before graduation I took part in putting negative comments about a girl that I really didn't know that was eventually read aloud on the stage during this assembly. Years later I remembered and I felt very guilty about it. I happened to run into her at a store one day and I apologized to her. Of course she looked at me like I had lost my mind but I felt better having said it.

I find myself in that position again. I remembered something I did to someone and I feel very bad about it. Now mind you, I didn't steal anyones boyfriend or anything like that or kill somebodies cat but I did treat them in a way that I am now ashamed of. The only thing is that it happened about seventeen years ago. If it were you would you go back and apologize? Or as One Republic says, "It's too late to apologize"?
